FROM THE EDITOR
Reno is filled with friendly people.
It’s one of the first things I noticed when I
moved here. Northern Nevadans seem open,
genuine, caring, and always willing to lend
a hand. This town also is packed with smart,
creative, innovative thinkers. I’ve met brilliant
people altering our lives for the better. Some
have been recognized for their efforts; others
like toiling behind the scenes to drive trends
and effect real change.
To honor their spirit, we feature four
fascinating individuals (who are just too big to
ignore) in our COVER story. Stacey Crowley
is a passionate green architect working hard to
make the 800-acre Kiley Ranch development
a fully sustainable community. She is
determined to influence responsible and environmentally conscious development
with this and other city projects.
Tim Casey and his wife/business partner, Jacquelyn Fuzell, are entrepreneurs
who help keep smart, talented people in town. Reno graduates often leave the area
because they don’t see opportunities to stay and create businesses. Casey and Fuzell
are supporting the entrepreneurial ambitions of local businesspeople and students
so they can carve niches for themselves here. In turn, we citizens and the local
economy benefit.
Finally, meet Brian Crosby, a fifth-grade teacher at Agnes Risley Elementary
School in Sparks. He is getting students excited about technology in radical ways.
Each of his fifth graders has an iBook on which he or she blogs, Skypes, makes
Wiki pages, and produces digital videos, podcasts, and videocasts. Crosby’s handson,
minds-on philosophy involves using computers as communication tools and
supplying at-risk kids with business skills and Internet ethics.
Other influentials are sprinkled throughout this issue, including Pat Campbell-
Cozzi, who created and runs Wildflower Village, a haven for the arts and artists,
and Bonney Brown, executive director of Nevada Humane Society, who is striving
to make Washoe County a no-kill community.
These dynamic innovators and their ideas are changing Reno. The future doesn’t
just happen. The next frontiers are crafted by bold visionaries with big dreams.
These are some of the minds that move Reno.
